How to begin cloth

So you want to try cloth diapers, and don't know where to begin? Follow these simple steps, and you will be on your way.

  1. Who are you diapering?    This will determine the size, and how many diapers you need.  Roughly a newborn goes through 12 diapers a day, which then goes down to about 6-9.  A toddler usually needs less, about 5-6 give or take in one day.
  2. Are you diapering more than one child?  You will have to of course by more diapers.  One size diapers are a good choice for those diapering 2 different age children.
  3. How often are you planning on washing your diapers? This also lets you know how many you need.
  4. What is your budget?  You will always save money when buying even the nicest diapers, but not everyone has that kind of cash to spend.  Generally, prefolds are less expensive than all in ones (AIO).

 What you need:

If you want to use prefolds: 1-2 dozen for every size (preemie, infant, standard), snappi to hold diaper together, diaper covers: 2-4 a day in every size (small, medium, large, xlarge).  Wool and ecofleece covers are good for night, and summer, for they breathe well. There also prefolds called contour diapers that are shaped like an hour glass, and are less bulk between baby's legs, and can be easier to fold up and use.

If you want to use fitted diapers you will need 12-24(depending on the age, and how often you will be washing) fitted diapers. These come in Preemie, infant, and toddler .  For example you might need 18 for your newborn in the infant size, and then only 12 for your toddler.  .  You will also need  about 2-4 diaper covers in each size you will be in.  Again, eco fleece and wool covers are excellent choices to allow air circulation for night and warm weather.

If you want to use One Size Pocket diapers:  9-24 diapers usually needed depending on the age of your child, and how often you wash.  Because these are one size you don't need to worry about sizes, for they fit a newborn, to a potty training toddler.  Beside the pocket diaper you need to purchase an insert to put in the pocket.  This can be a preemie or infant prefold, or inserts designed to fit in these diapers.. When a pocket is soiled, the whole thing needs to be laundered.  It usually cannot be worn again. These diapers come in a snap or velcro (can also be called touchtape or aplix) versions

If you want to use One Size All in one (AIO) diapers you simply need to choose how many you want, and get the wet bag and pail liner.  Again, a good option for multiple age children for they fit from newborn to a potty training toddler. When an AIO is soiled once, it needs to be laundered. These diapers come in a snap or velcro versions

As for any kind of diapers you choose you will also need a wet bag, and pail liner

The following diapers are good for smaller newborns:

Mommy's Touch infant AIO

Organic Caboose La Petite newborn fitted

Preemie contour diapers

Of course you could always mix and match.  You could use prefolds at home, and get AIO's, pockets, or fitted diapers  when you are out and about.  You could even decide what you like and use some for day and others for night. You will find that a prefold needs to be changed more often than an AIO or pocket.  Some diapers fit better on some babies than others.
